(About the event)

Long before concert halls, music was something people did together, often in a circle, often to mark the turning of the year. Midwinter songs, spring dances around a decorated pole, harvest rounds: across Europe, communities found ways to gather, hold hands and move in time.

This free evening brings together a small group of singers and musicians who work with folk traditions from Poland, the Balkans, Scandinavia and the British Isles. The first part is for listening, the second is for everyone. No experience is needed; a caller will teach a handful of simple circle dances, and the steps are designed to be learned in a few minutes.

About the music

The songs range from unaccompanied winter carols to dance tunes for fiddle, accordion and frame drum. Many have been passed on orally for generations, changing a little each time. The musicians introduce each piece briefly, saying where it comes from and how it was traditionally used.

Our image shows a ribbon dance of the kind usually held in late spring, its dancers circling a tall pole under a summer sun. Midwinter dances are simpler and closer together, but the shape is the same: a circle that anyone can join, and that only works if everyone keeps hold.
